the road to North Kansas City Hospital...

Life is filled with roads that take us many places with the different choices that we make.  Our retirement began in July 2020.  In the 1½ years that followed, we have journeyed to many different places and traveled 1000’s of miles on roads throughout the United States.  What a joy these blessing filled months have been.

On Monday, March 28th the road I travel will take me from Lawrence, KS to Missouri’s North Kansas City Hospital.  Because of back issues that have been a problem for several years, a decision had to be made.  In January 2022, after consults with medical professionals, we made the decision to have surgery on my back that would result in L4-S1 fusion.

I have been under the care of gifted and skilled physicians from Topeka, Lawrence and Kansas City.  Specialists have been from Orthopedic Health of Kansas City – with Dr. Andre Jakoi being my Orthopedic Spine Surgeon for this part of life’s journey.  Each provided insight into the decision that we made.

There are unknowns with Monday’s surgery.  I have chosen not to explore videos and postings on the internet.  I do know that I am no longer able to continue with the limitations that exist with my spinal stenosis and resulting pinched nerve.  The limitations are becoming significant which helped to make this decision easier.  Surgery, after careful consideration, was the best and only choice for me.

With support from family and friends the weeks ahead will be filled with healing.  My life will continue to be filled with blessings.  Prayers are appreciated.  God is good.

  1. So sorry Ken. I have an unstable spine that may someday require a fusion. I stopped biking. I’m actually feeling some sciatic issues but not too bad on this trip. I am praying that you have a safe and successful surgery and recovery
